Getting Involved

Welcome to Jackson County!  We hope you feel right at home and encourage you to jump right in.  Getting involved is one of the best ways to meet people and become part of the community. Here, you can find a wide variety of opportunities.  You’re sure to find one, or two, or three that are of interest.

The library offers a wide selection of books, magazines, newspapers, book on tapes, CDs, DVD, and VHS, as well as digital books and interlibrary loans.  Computers and wi-fi are available.  Services also include storytimes, Lego Club, summer reading programs, youth and adult book clubs, and puzzle checkouts.  A meeting room can be reserved.  A book sale is held annually in April and October, but books can also be purchased throughout the year in The Book Nook.

Holton Community Hospital Auxiliary

The Auxiliary’s role is to enhance the patients’ experience.  They provide funds for remodeling and updating, for stuffed bears to be given to young patients, and for new mother gifts.  Fundraisers are held throughout the year – a soup lunch in the Fall, a candy and cookie sale in the Winter, and a 5k run in the Spring.  They also operate the pop and snack machines at the hospital entrance. Dues are $10/year.

Opportunities include:
*attending the general meetings (1st Tuesday every four months - January, April, July, and October) at noon, downstairs
*Serving on the board
*volunteering for fundraisers and projects

Jackson County Friends of Hospice

The mission of Jackson County Friends of Hospice is to provide physical, spiritual, emotional, and social support to enable people to live with hope and dignity while coping with terminal illness and loss.  Friends of Hospice partners with Holton Community Hospital Hospice to provide volunteers to assist and support families with a variety of care for their loved ones.  Hospice volunteers are men and women who have been selected and trained to help families during one of the most stressful times of their lives.  Membership to Jackson County Friends of Hospice is $5.02 a year.

Opportunities include:
*Being a member to support the cause
*Becoming a trained volunteer to serve patients and their families when invited to do so by the family
*Volunteering for community service projects
*Helping in the Memorial Garden at Rafter's Park
*Making comfort shawls, memorial angels, greeting cards
*Computer and administrative volunteering

Four Seasons Garden Club

The Garden Club is for those who enjoy gardening or plants.  Each meeting includes a presentation on something to do with plants, flower or food gardens, or related topics such as bees.  Afterward, refreshments and fellowship are enjoyed.  Annual events include plant/seed/bulb exchange, silent auction, and potluck dinner.  Dues are $3/year.

Opportunities include:
*Attend monthly meetings (2nd Mondays at 7 pm, location varies)
*Host a meeting
*Give a presentation
*Volunteer at the County Fair in the Flower Show area
